Lead acid battery advantages & disadvantages
Although lead acid batteries are widely used because they have a number of distinct advantages, they also have several major disadvantages. All these need to be considered when deciding upon whether to use this technology or not.
Lead Acid Battery Advantages
1, Mature technology
2, Relatively cheap to manufacture and buy (they provide the lowest cost per unit capacity for rechargeable cells)
3, Large current capability
4, Can be made for a variety of applications
5, Tolerant to abuse
6, Tolerant of overcharging
7, Wide range of sizes and specifications available
8, Many producers worldwide
Lead Acid Battery Disadvantages
1, Fails after a few years use lifespan typically 300 - 500 cycles
2, Cannot always be used in a variety of orientations
3, Corrosive electrolyte (can cause burns to people and corrosion on metalwork)
4, Lead is not environmentally friendly
5, Acid needs disposing of with care
6, Not suitable for fast charging
7, Must be stored in charged state once electrolyte introduced
8, Typical charging efficiency only around 70%

Advantages of VRLA lead acid 12v 4Ah GEL type sealed maintenance free motorcycle battery price
1. Maintenance-free,completely sealed (all gases recycled internally)
2. AGM separator design eliminates acid spills
3. High integrity terminal seal
4. Self-regulating relief valve
5. Low self-discharge rate
6. Good effect of cold- starting performance
7. No PCL phenomenon
Gel battery (also called "gel cell") is a VRLA battery with a gelified electrolyte; the sulfuric acid is mixed with fumed silica, which makes the resulting mass gel-like and immobile. Unlike a flooded wet-cell lead-acid battery, these batteries do not need to be kept upright. Gel batteries reduce the electrolyte evaporation, spillage (and subsequent corrosion problems) common to the wet-cell battery, and boast greater resistance to shock and vibration. Chemically they are almost the same as wet (non-sealed) batteries except that the antimony in the lead plates is replaced by calcium, and gas recombination can take place.
Gel Battery Advantages & Limitations:
Advantages | Maintenance free; can be mounted sideways; low self-discharge |
Long lasting due to its ability to transfer heat to the outside
Performance stays high until the end of life, then drops rapidly
Produces water by combining oxygen and hydrogen
Safe operation and forgiving if abused; less dry-out than AGM
High cycle count, tolerance to abuse and heat
Large variety of battery sizes available
Limitations | Higher manufacturing cost than AGM |
Sensitive to overcharging (gel is more tolerant than AGM)
Moderate specific energy and load current
Subject to release gases. Ventilation needed
Must be stored in charged condition (less critical than flooded) |
